Subwax Distribution / Physical Education
Eight things which, on their own, might not seem connected. But join the dots and you’ll see that for Barcelona’s Baldo, each of these represent the many strings to his bow.
As a producer, Baldo’s discography speaks for itself. Gerd Janson’s Running Back as well as Step Recordings are just a couple examples of labels he’s graced in recent times, serving up two EPs in the form of Human Connection and Working Overtime.
From producing, to distributing. Record collectors around the world will be familiar with Subwax Distribution, the Barcelona institution that distributes releases for a plethora of vinyl-only outfits. Baldo heads up it’s operations, alongside business partner Paul Marele. With nearly two hundred labels on the roster, it’s become a go-to service for several of the scene’s leading imprints, including Limousine Dream, Butter Side Up, Haŵs Music, Mindhelmet and Slapfunk to name a few.
All things considered, it should come as no surprise that Baldo has been running his own record labels for many years already. Physical Education and Curated By Time are the two most active currently - each represent the musical styles that make him tick, with vintage releases aplenty. The second is all about re-releasing forgotten gems from the ‘90s, so it’s no wonder iconic artists like 100Hz and Affie Yusuf have appeared on it in recent years.
Last but not least is BLD Tape Recordings, which is Baldo’s home for all things acid, breaks and techno. 2022 will see the label put out its first release in two years, courtesy of Baldo himself through his BLD moniker. Quality over quantity is the mantra: twelve releases spread over eight years shows that less is more when it comes to music of this calibre.
From looking back, to moving forward. Several EPs are already in the pipeline for Baldo, with a forthcoming appearance on E-Beamz lined up for later this year. He’ll also be releasing on his own Physical Education for the first time - keep an eye (and ear) out for that one - as well as the aforementioned BLD Tape Recordings, under his seldom-seen BLD alias.
Add to that his residency at seminal Barcelona nightspot Razzmatazz, one that he’s held down for nearly a decade, and you’ll quickly learn that Baldo’s involvement in dance music runs deep. He’s immersed in it across multiple levels, showcasing an innate passion for the industry he calls home.
Whether it be running multiple labels, or operating a global distribution company; releasing on Running Back, or DJing at Smart Bar, Sonar and beyond, Baldo’s multidisciplinary skills are plain to see.
And at the core of it? His love for music. Now that’s something we can all salute.
